Liquid Motion Graphics

While exploring new trends and styles in motion graphics, I was particularly intrigued by this seemingly countermovement to the popular geometric animations, called ‘Liquid Motion’. This aptly-labelled animation style involved organic shapes transforming like liquids, smearing and splashing back together to form new shapes. To fuel my curiosity on finding the extensive possibilities of its executions, I opted to learn-by-doing.

The technique

Having researched further, I deciphered how inspite of the abstract, the trend evolved from one of the core principles of animation, called ‘Exaggeration’, which played with the form and volume of a shape, more often organic, that gave a life to the motion.

Since the nature of this animation style was so custom and dynamic, the execution entailed meticulously creating almost every frame for each shape and splotch, in the software, while adding fine details and exaggerations to it. The technique to me, had close parallels to creating a 2D Animation.

The product

A liquid motion technique video – drops and smears swirled in to form a typography, then re-liquified and swung over, to transition into an avatar. The application of the technique lent itself well to seamlessly transforming letters into a character.
